Biography of Paul R. Amman, M.S.

Paul Ammann earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.   He was one of the co-founders of The Brattle Group, Inc., an economic, financial, and management consulting firm.  At Brattle, his primary consulting practice focused on environmental matters, including hazardous waste, air, and water pollution control projects; evaluation of emerging environmental processes; and due diligence related to environmental issues.  He also served as a consulting or testifying expert on engineering issues in approximately 30 environmental civil penalty cases.  Immediately prior to Brattle, Mr. Ammann worked on many hazardous waste-related consulting engagements through Putnam, Hayes & Bartlett, Inc.

During the first 25 years of Mr. Ammann’s professional career, he worked in industry, including as Director of Engineering and Technology at Charles River Associates, a consulting firm; Director of Process Technology at Kennecott Corporation; as a Group Leader at Avco Corporation; and as a Project Engineer at both Union Carbide Nuclear Corporation and Stone & Webster  Engineering Corporation. 

Mr. Ammann’s consulting practice has consistently involved the application of sound engineering principles to environmental issues, including in the context of environmental civil penalty disputes.  Those engagements have involved many different industries, including mining; petrochemicals; dairy operations; food processing; steel and commodity metals manufacture; light metals manufacturing; electrochemical manufacturing; and metals refining and smelting.

 Mr. Ammann also has consulted in dozens of Superfund-related engagements.  In many of these assignments, he provided analyses of past and future cleanup costs.  In others, he assessed the relative contributions of individual companies to cleanup problems at multi-party sites, or evaluated whether cleanup actions at specific sites complied with the requirements of the National Contingency Plan.

Mr. Ammann has served as an expert witness both in depositions and at trials.
